Promise of Place Conference
Since 2002, the Northern Forest Center has presented Promise
of Place conferences in collaboration with several partners
as a way to strengthen the practice of place-based education
in the region.
Place-based education is firmly rooted in what is local. Rather
than learning solely from traditional textbooks, learners incorporate
local elements with personal experience as part of the education
process. Research shows that place-based education leads to higher
levels of student engagement and achievement than conventional
textbook approaches do.
Promise of Place conferences provide training, opportunities
for educators to learn from each other and share ideas, problem-solving,
networking and other tools for incorporating place-based education
into practice.
As many as 200 educators have attended each Promise of Place conference
to expand their knowledge and reinvigorate their teaching. Past
seminar topics have included Exploring Our Towns: Place-Based
History Projects in the Classroom; Musical Heritage of the Northern
Forest; Community Connections through Youth Garden Projects;
and The Evolving Face of Place-Based Education.
The 2007
Promise of Place Conference will be held March 15 – 17,
2007 at Lake Morey Inn, Fairlee, VT.
Promise of Place is a regional conference presented by the Northern
Forest Center and the Center
for Place-Based Learning and Community Engagement, a partnership
of Shelburne
Farms Farms, the National
Park Service Conservation Study Institute and Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller
National Historical Park.
This conference is also made possible through a collaboration
with the Northeast Center of the National Wildlife Federation
and Antioch New England, with support from the Wellborn Ecology
Fund of the Upper Valley Region of New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. |
