Help Revitalize Communities and the
Economy Across the Northern Forest
With your help we are building a sustainable future for the
Northern Forest—a future with a thriving economy, vibrant communities
and a conserved landscape.
The Center works with a broad network of partners to on sustainable
forestry, renewable energy, and public policy because we believe
that the health and stewardship of the environment is directly
linked to the health and vitality of this region’s communities
and economy.

Through collaborative efforts with local partners and communities,
the Center has:
- Conserved 22,000 acres in Grand Lake Stream, ME, and 5,000
acres in Errol, NH, by helping to create community-owned forests
that protect land from timber liquidation and real estate speculation,
create opportunities for sustainable forest management, and
other long-term benefits to communities
- Raised federal funds to support local projects that impact
the local economy and community, such as educating builders
and inspectors about options for using locally-produced (ungraded)
framing timber in the Adirondacks, and publishing an educational
manual about land and wildlife management for forest owners
in Vermont.
- Educated and inspired more than 100,000
people through the
Ways of the Woods mobile forest heritage museum, helping people
learn about the region’s forest heritage, new forest research
and emerging economic opportunities.
The Center works across the 4-state region to provide leadership,
regional strategy, investment, and recognition through extraordinary
collaborative efforts and partnerships:
- Completed the first-ever, 4-state
regional economic strategy – the Sustainable Economy Initiative (SEI) – and gained the
support of all four Northern Forest governors;
- Brought Ways
of the Woods to all four state capitals to highlight the
forest-based economy with legislators, officials, and citizens;
- United
the Governors to encourage economic stimulus investment in
the Northern Border Regional Commission to fund implementation
of the SEI recommendations;
- Secured selection of the Northern
Forest as one of only three Forest Investment Zones in the
nation, resulting in funding to support collaborative work
in the areas of renewable energy, sustainable forestry, ecosystem
services and regional public policy.
Please make a donation today. Your support benefits the people,
communities and economy of the Northern Forest. It is essential
to have a unified approach on major issues such as sustainable
forestry, renewable energy, and public policy.
