Ways of the Woods: People and the Land in the Northern Forest—2008 Tour
Ways of the Woods is the Northern Forest Center’s mobile museum about forest heritage and culture across northern Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York. This traveling exhibition combines multi-media displays housed inside an 18-wheel tractor-trailer with outdoor displays, artifacts and children’s activities to explore the ever-changing relationships between people and land across the Northern Forest region.Created in part through support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Ways of the Woods helps people appreciate the past, better understand the present and plan for the future in one of the nation’s most important and rapidly changing regions.More than 40,000 people in 40 Northern Forest communities have toured Ways of the Woods since its launch in 2006. The 2008 Tour will include school visits in the spring and a 20-community Fairs & Festivals Tour that will travel across all four states from April through October.

WHAT IS THE NORTHERN FOREST?
The Northern Forest is the largest intact forest ecosystem east of the Mississippi, spanning 30 million acres across northern Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York. Its ecological significance is well known: vast areas of wild forest, critical habitat and the headwaters of major rivers. But it is more than an ecological resource. It is also home to 1.5 million people whose cultures, livelihoods, families, aspirations and dreams are tied to the forest.

WHAT IS THE NORTHERN FOREST CENTER?
Founded in 1997, the Center works through networks and partnerships to build a sustainable economy, revitalize local communities and conserve the landscape of the Northern Forest of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.
