The Northern Forest Center builds economic opportunity and community vitality while fostering sound forest stewardship across the Northern Forest.

We see sustainable energy as essential to the long-term viability of the rural communities we serve—especially wood heat, given our abundant forests. Thus we’re thrilled to announce a new opportunity to visit a place that demonstrates the best of sustainable energy technology and policy and the home of modern wood heat—the state of Upper Austria.

You’re invited to join Center Vice President Joe Short and Energy Program Director Maura Adams on a 6-day tour of Upper Austria that shows what’s possible in sustainable energy—and what we could achieve in our own region.

Why is the Center touring Upper Austria?

  • Exemplary approach to sustainable energy and efficiency transition and the home of modern wood heat.
  • 35% of total primary energy and 50% of heating energy comes from renewable sources.
  • On track to reach 100% renewables for electricity and space heating by 2030.
  • Renewable energy economy: 2.2 billion Euros a year and 8,900 jobs.

Each day will focus on a different piece of the energy picture: architecture, biomass heat, the forest resource, solar heat and electricity, and biomass-fueled combined heat and power. We’ll visit exemplary facilities, meet heads of innovative companies, and learn from policymakers how their commitment to renewable energy has become an enormous economic driver.

Our tour partner is Christiane Egger, deputy manager of the Energy Agency of Upper Austria, who manages the Ökoenergie-Cluster, a network of 150 companies active in renewable energy and energy efficiency. Christiane has hosted numerous groups and delivers a very high standard for both hospitality and educational value.
