Beginning this Fall and continuing through 2014, the Northern Forest Center is sponsoring a series of articles in Northern Woodlands magazine that captures success stories of innovation occurring in the region’s wood products manufacturing industry through the help of the Regional Wood Products Consortium.

The first issue kicked off with a great piece by Dave Mance called The Multiplier Effect: Rebuilding the Wood Product Manufacturing Base in the Northeast. Through the lens of Cushman Furniture – a bygone manufacturer that was based in North Bennington, VT – Dave explores why we should be concerned about wood manufacturing and the role it plays in our regional economy.

Future issues will highlight a local company and what it’s doing to stay competitve in today’s global economy. Across the four states encompassing the Northern Forest, wood products manufacturing accounts for more than 20,000 jobs and provides local markets for billions of board-feet that are retained for value-added processing. Every log that gets processed locally into furniture, flooring, cabinetry, toys, baseball bats, household items and more sends a positive economic ripple through the community. Thanks, Northern Woodlands for helping us bang the (wood) drum loudly…(with wooden drumsticks, of course)!
