The Northern Forest Center and Maine Woods Discovery partners announce the 150th Thoreau-Wabanaki Canoe Tour to commemorate the day Henry David Thoreau’s classic The Maine Woods was published. A group of Maine Guides, Penobscot Nation members, scholars and others will trace the last of three adventures by Thoreau and a Penobscot guide on a 16-day canoe adventure. The rigorous excursion takes the travelers across hundreds of miles of rivers and lakes and over 2-mile portages. They will experience the enduring landscape of the Maine Woods largely as Thoreau would have in 1857, showcasing the spectacular opportunities that they provide to visitors near and far.

The public is also encouraged to follow the crew on Facebook at and on Twitter @northern_forest using #150Thoreau.
