With grant funding from the Northern Forest Destination Development Initiative, the Northern Forest Canoe Trail has developed six new paddling itineraries to attract paddlers to some of the less visited waterways in the region.
The Northern Forest Destination Development Initiative is managed by the Northern Forest Center in partnership with the Northeastern Vermont Development Association and NEK (Northeast Kingdom) Collaborative of Vermont. Funding comes from the Northern Border Regional Commission.
"We're excited to expand our catalogue of resources for paddlers and help them discover the region and fall in love with our waterways, landscapes and communities,” said Karrie Thomas, executive director of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.
Canoe Trail field teams collected field data on nine paddling routes and have produced itineraries with maps and accompanying videos for six options in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom and Maine’s High Peaks.
“The new routes dovetail with the Center’s interest in helping these areas grow as recreation destinations and in providing new recreation options for local people,” said Joe Short, vice president of the Center.
