Young Leaders Share Importance of Civic Involvement

Center webinar presents five young municipal leaders who are driving change in their communities.

In our May 16 webinar on Empowering Young Leaders – part of our Building the New Forest Future series – panelists from across the region shared insights on the role of young leaders in local governments.

Isabella Ronson, program coordinator at the Center, facilitated a discussion among five panelists with varied roles, experience, and perspectives. We recorded the discussion for you to listen to – just click the link below.

Our Panelists were Tyler Adkins, Chair of the Monson, ME Selectboard, Jordanna Mallach, Supervisor of the Town of Harrietstown, NY, Chloe Maxmin, former Maine State Senator and activist in youth organizing, Sam Mayne, Conservation Commission member in Lancaster, NH, and Michael Olio, Town Administrator of the Town of Richford, VT.

The discussion spanned a diverse range of topics – from the value and importance of younger perspectives to how to reduce barriers for more civic participation.

Key takeaways from the discussion include the importance of individual engagement in local governments to push for solutions that are important to supporting vibrant communities and creating entry points for more people to be involved in their communities through lower commitment opportunities. Panelists also emphasized their increased ability to make change in small communities.
