Northeast Kingdom, VT

The Northeast Kingdom—the three northeastern-most counties in Vermont—has earned “must see” honors from the book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die and the National Geographic Society. At more than 2,000 square miles in area, the Northeast Kingdom has only 55 towns, one incorporated city and a population of about 65,000.

Sitting between the Green Mountains to the west and the Connecticut River to the east, the landscape offers hiking, biking, skiing, swimming, boating, snowmobiling, and great fishing for every level of outdoor adventurer.

The Kingdom is more than 80 percent forested and has a long history of forest management, forest-product manufacturing, and agriculture. Residents and visitors can take advantage of arts and cultural destinations, including the oldest art gallery in the United States and the eclectic natural history collections of the Fairbanks Museum, and a strong creative business community. And there is no shortage of good local food and breweries to round out your experience, whether you are visiting or living in the Kingdom.

St. Johnsbury, one of the region’s gateway towns in its southeastern corner, is seeing a resurgence after many years of economic decline. The region’s entrepreneurial and creative spirit is sparking change and attracting new residents, but good housing options are few.

Addressing the Lack of Housing

The Center redeveloped the historic armory building at 560 Railroad Street in St. Johnsbury to create 9 apartments and 2 commercial units, priced to suit the people who make the town hum: teachers, hospital staff, entrepreneurs, hospitality workers and more. Partnering with Catamount Arts, one of the units features an artist-in-residence.
