Rethinking Recreation as a Community Resource
Abundant outdoor recreation opportunities are one of the most beloved aspects of life in the Adirondacks – and yet recreation planning in the Adirondacks often does not focus on supporting community vitality and economic development.
A group of community leaders, outdoor enthusiasts, and entrepreneurs from the region has come together to help build that important connection.
The Adirondack Community Recreation Alliance sprang to life at the Center’s Northern Forest Outdoor Recreation Symposium in November 2018. It emphasizes the sustainable use of the forest as the region’s greatest asset, promotes a diverse local economy, and invests in creating the conditions that attract younger people and entrepreneurs to Adirondack communities.
Over time, the Alliance seeks to leverage recreation assets and the region’s recreation-rich culture to secure long-lasting community and economic benefits for Adirondack towns and villages.
