High speed internet access is fundamental to making rural communities viable and attractive places to live and work. Internet access affects everything from education to health services, business development, and basic quality of life.

And yet, extending universal, affordable broadband service to rural communities can be complicated, expensive, and slow. That’s why the Center is building community readiness and helping local leaders navigate this critical road the future through programs that:

  • Build community readiness for action through the Broadband Boot Camp and support for community broadband committees;
  • Expand public internet access through support for new “fiber-to-the-premises” infrastructure and public Wi-Fi hotspots;
  • Address digital equity and inclusion through investment in library resources, including free public internet access and computers;
  • Advance state and federal policy and funding initiatives, often in partnership with state and regional coalitions.

With the coronavirus pandemic intensifying demand for universal high-speed internet service, it is more important than ever for rural communities to organize themselves to address this vital need.

The Center is committed to making sure Northern Forest communities don’t get caught on the wrong side of the digital divide.
