Panelists Offer Ways Communities Can Boost Resilience

Center webinar presents tools for communities to prepare for the climate future facing this region.

In our Jan. 17 webinar on Ensuring Climate Resilience – part of our Building the New Forest Future series – panelists from across the region gave insights on the role of communities, organizations, and individuals right now in preparing for our shared future.

Maura Adams, Director of Community Investment, facilitated a discussion among four panelists with varied experience and perspectives. We recorded the discussion for you to listen to – just click the link below.

Cameron Wake of the University of New Hampshire’s Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space, provided insight into the drought, flooding, and climate migration the region can anticipate as a result of climate change.
Scott Vlaun, executive director of Center for an Ecology-Based Economy, discussed tactical solutions his organization is bringing to western Maine communities.
Joshua LaFountain of the Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy shared that they are helping communities reduce flooding risks, especially at road-stream crossings.
Sam Evans-Brown, executive director of Clean Energy New Hampshire, talked about the benefits of a distributed power grid as a mitigation strategy.

The discussion spanned a diverse range of topics – from engaging communities and building capacity to leveraging funding and making informed development decisions.

Key takeaways from the discussion include the importance of individual engagement in local governments to push these types of initiatives forward and the need to build municipal capacity through partnerships and outside funding. Panelists also emphasized the power of regional collaboration to bring together increased funding, informed future planning, and added capacity that would not be available for towns working independently.
