Planning Ahead for Recreation
Tupper Lake is rich in recreation opportunities that span the seasons and extend from car-accessible to some of the wildest parts of New York State. The Center has partnered with the Town of Tupper Lake to develop a plan to connect, promote, protect, and enhance the community’s existing recreation assets – and add new offerings to bolster the recreation economy in the winter and shoulder seasons.
This work is being supported by a New York State Smart Growth grant that the Center helped to secure. Part of the funding will directly support the James C. Frenette Sr. Recreational Center, owned by the Town of Tupper Lake, which is a golf course in summer and a hidden gem of a cross-country ski center in winter. Funds will allow for physical improvements to the ski center, including lights for night skiing.
The Center’s commitment to this work springs from our enthusiasm about what Tupper Lake has to offer and our belief that well-planned, diverse recreation assets help attract and retain new residents, serve long-time residents, and also enhance the tourism economy.
By adding capacity for recreation planning and asset development in Tupper Lake, the Center is helping this special Adirondack community realize multiple benefits.
