Attracting and Retaining Residents in the Adirondacks
The vitality of communities in the Adirondack Park — like many other places in the Northern Forest — is threatened by the impact of younger people leaving while the remaining population ages.
The combination of these two population trends threatens important community institutions such as schools and reduces the number of people available for the workforce, community leadership and volunteer roles critical to community success.
With input from hundreds of Adirondack residents, the Center developed a strategy communities can use to attract a new generation of residents and bring back young people who have left.
The strategy identifies opportunities for the Adirondack region to address these challenges and attract new residents by building on regional and community strengths and capitalizing on existing assets. With millions of annual visitors and people who deeply love this region, the Adirondacks is perfectly positioned to attract new residents who are looking for a home that aligns with their values, presents opportunity, and provides incredible quality of life.
