Contributing to Climate Solutions

The Northern Forest is a buttress against climate change. Its vast forestland stores billions of tons of carbon in trees and soil and produces wood, a renewable resource that can be used instead of fossil fuels or carbon-intensive materials to significantly cut emissions.

The Center believes that a full spectrum of responsible forest management – from ecological reserves to sustainable forest management – enables the Northern Forest to contribute significantly to climate change mitigation while maintaining a viable forest-based economy.

Forests at Work Mitigating Climate Change

Expanding Use of Wood Heat

The Center has been championing the benefits of using wood heat instead of fossil fuels in our region since 2011 because wood heat is an important contributor to the Northern Forest economy, and it contributes less to greenhouse gas build-up than fossil fuels do.

Mass Timber

We’re supporting efforts to make wood a common construction choice for large buildings in the Northeast and to produce Mass Timber in the region as well.

Strong Wood Markets Support Climate Solutions

Cutting trees helps forests remain forests. Learn how strong wood markets help keep the region’s forests intact.

Feel Good Heat Campaign Resonates

With rising oil prices top of mind, the Feel Good Heat campaign launched a new set of ads and content on the price stability of wood heat.

Greenhouse Gases and Wood Pellet Heat

A greenhouse gas lifecycle analysis shows that switching from fossil fuels to Northern Forest wood pellets reduces greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.

More About Forests

Conveying Complexity

We communicate the complex interrelationships among forest health, the economy, and forest management to support holistic collaboration and dialogue.

Managing for Resilience

We’re building consensus around a stewardship ethic to ensure that the globally significant Northern Forest is healthy, productive, and resilient into the future.
